Point # 1 The Old Covenant (represented by Mt. Sinai) was characterized by restricted access and fear in Israel’s approach God. It was also “earthly” (18-21).

Seven features descriptive of the terrifying encounter with God at Sinai.

1. “That which cannot be touched”
2. Burning with fire
3. Darkness
4. Gloom
5. Storm
6. Trumpet blast
7. A voice speaking words

Point # 2 The New Covenant (represented by Mt. Zion) is characterized by the church’s free access to God, in joy, though his Son, Jesus Christ. It is also “spiritual”. This is of transcendent importance (22-24).

Seven things New Covenant Christians have come to

1. Mount Zion, the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem
2. Thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly
3. The church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven
4. God, the Judge of all
5. The spirits of the righteous made perfect
6. Jesus, the mediator of a NEW covenant
7. The sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel

Point # 3 Therefore, these new covenantal privileges call for allegiance, obedience, thanksgiving . . . and reverent, fearful worship (25-29).
