Lord, Teach Us to Pray (Pt. 1)

April 29, 2018 Preacher: Series: Luke

Passage: Luke 11:1–4

“I believe that prayer is the measure of the man, spiritually, in a way that nothing else is, so that how we pray is as important a question as we can ever face.” (J.I. Packer)

  1. The Christian’s fundamental attitudes in prayer
  • God as Father, we his adopted children.
  • The desire that God’s Kingdom be consummated in its fullness at the return of Jesus.
  • A recognized dependence on God for daily provision
  • A recognized need for divine forgiveness.
  • A recognized need to forgive others.
  • A request for spiritual protection.

New Testament concept of “kingdom” *

  • universal/saving (in relation to people)
  • already here/not yet come (in relation to time)

* I was greatly helped in my understanding of this passage by D.A Carson’s “Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount and His Confrontation with the World”, and an article (which I’ve since lost) on the nature of the Kingdom of God.
