Point 1: Honour your father and your mother. (Exodus 20:12)

• To honour our father and our mother is to begin with recognition that our very existence is dependent upon them.
• The promise gives us a great clue as to at least one of the reasons why this commandment is so important: parents had an important role to play in communicating the covenant’s requirements to their children.
• The commandment does not limit its applicability to only good fathers and mothers.
• To honour your father and your mother does not presuppose that at every stage of your existence you should obey them.

Point 2: Children, obey your father and mother in the Lord. (Ephesians 6:1-3; Col. 3:20)

Point 3: Hate your father and mother. (Luke 14:26-27)
