Big Picture: Jesus’ example of entrusting himself to God rather than retaliating is the example Christians must follow when we suffer unjustly. Peter grounds his ethical teaching on the example of the Suffering Servant of Isaiah 52-53, laying particular stress on how Christians are to act and react when we suffer unjustly in the home, in the culture, and in the king’s dominion. In every case, we are to submit ourselves, for the Lord’s sake, to every human authority established by God. “Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor.”

Point 1: Christian, submit yourself, for the Lord’s sake, to governmental authority.(2:13-17)

Point 2: Christian, model Christ by submitting to (and considerately exercising) the authority structures in the home. (2:18-3:7)

Point 3: Christian, put the other members of New City first. Be like-minded, sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate, and humble so that you may inherit a blessing. (3:8-12)
