Jesus Washes His Disciples' Feet
August 14, 2022 Preacher: John Bell Series: The Gospel of John
Passage: John 13:1–17
The Big Picture: Our Lord’s foot washing points to his death on the
cross: the exalted Messiah assumes the role of the despised
servant to cleanse others. This is to be our example, Christian.
1. Jesus “knows” . . . (1-3)
- that the hour has come for him to leave this world and go
to the Father (1) - that the Father had put all things under his power (3)
- that he had come from God and was returning to God (3)
Therefore, the brewing satanic conspiracy will not have its ultimate
desired effect (2)
2. Jesus washes his disciples’ feet (4-17)
Jesus’ stunning, humble act of foot washing
- displays his love (1)
- symbolizes spiritual cleansing: both in our initial justification, and cleansing from daily sin, with confession (6–10)
- models how we should serve each other (12–17)
