God's Beloved, Suffering Son

Passage: Mark 9:1–13

Main Point: the suffering of Jesus is not incompatible with his glory.

Point 1: In the transfiguration, Jesus, the beloved Son, shows he is God (1-3).

Point 2: God the Father’s attestation of his beloved Son shows his salvation-historical supremacy. Jesus supersedes every lawgiver and prophet who has come before, or who comes after (4-7).

Point 3: The longed-for redemption of the Day of the Lord can be purchased only through the suffering of the Son of Man (8-13).
