Big picture of 1 & 2 Chronicles: The book of Chronicles functions as the capstone sermon for the entire Old Testament. It provides an inspired commentary on God’s great works from creation to the return from exile inspiring firm hope that all God’s promises to his people (represented by the royal line of David) and about his place (God’s special revelatory prescense in the temple) will indeed come to pass.
- Humanity’s hope is bound up with the “house” of David, and it endures. (1:1 - 3:24)
- All Israel is united again—but in exile for their unfaithfulness. (4:1-9:1)
Three emphases of the Chronicler’s survey of “the twelve” tribes.
- The centrality of the priest-king tribes.
- The faithful seek the Lord in prayer.
- The exile was the direct and proper result of idolatry.
- The exile has not snuffed out Israel’s hope but rather renewed it—along with the hope of humanity. (9:2-34)
*This sermon owes a debt to The Message of Chronicles by Michael Wilcock and Dominion & Dynasty by Stephen Dempster
