The Heart of the Matter

August 18, 2024 Preacher: Alex Bloomfield Series: Chronicles: The End of the Beginning

Passage: 2 Chronicles 10:1– 36:23

The Chronicler’s main point: Seek the Lord wholeheartedly.

Structural Overview of 2 Chr. 10-36: The Chronicler provides a fresh look at the kings of Judah who reigned from Solomon to the exile. He compares each of them against the pattern of wholehearted devotion to the Lord set by David, chiefly by evaluating their care (or disregard) for the proper worship of Yahweh at the temple.

Big Picture of the whole book of Chronicles: The book functions as the capstone sermon for the entire Old Testament. It provides an inspired commentary on God’s great works from creation to the return from exile inspiring firm hope that all God’s promises to his people (represented by the royal line of David) and about his place (God’s special revelatory presence in the temple) will indeed come to pass.

1)  Four marks of a person who wholeheartedly seeks the Lord:

       a) Joy, care, and promotion of proper corporate   worship amongst God’s people. (Abijah-Hezekiah)

       b) Comprehensive obedience to the Word. (Josiah)

        c) Humble repentance. (Manasseh-Amon)

        d) Prayerful reliance on the Lord. (Jehoshaphat-Asa)

2) A belief about God that grounds these four marks: His promises will not fail.

3) A commission the wholehearted follower of God must respond to. (36:22-23) (Mat. 28:18-20)
