Three actions summarize how the triune God saves his people from their sins: plan, accomplish, and apply.
1. God planned to save individuals when he chose them before he created the world.
2. God accomplishes his plan through Christ’s saving work.
3. God initially applies his plan by effectively calling and regenerating individuals.
The triune God planned, accomplishes, and applies our salvation. In particular, the Father planned, the Son accomplishes, and the Spirit applies our salvation. The Father, Son, and Spirit inseparably work together—never against each other. So how does the triune God execute his sovereign plan to save individuals? Three ways:
1. Christ’s saving work
2. the Holy Spirit’s regenerating work
3. God-ordained means—through hearing God’s word and through prayer.
A hyper-Calvinist is someone who either:
1. Denies that the gospel call applies to all who hear, OR
2. Denies that faith is the duty of every sinner, OR
3. Denies that the gospel makes any “offer” of Christ, salvation, or mercy to the non-elect
(or denies that the offer of divine mercy is free and universal), OR
4. Denies that there is such a thing as “common grace,” OR
5. Denies that God has any sort of love for the nonelect.
All five varieties of hyper-Calvinism undermine evangelism or twist the Gospel message.
“How Do I Know if God Has Elected Me?”
• Calling and justification are evidence of election
• Following Jesus the shepherd is evidence of election
• A transformed life is evidence of election
• Application: confirm your election
