God-Glorifying Unity

July 27, 2025 Preacher: Alex Bloomfield Series: Psalms

Passage: Psalm 133:1– 134:3

Songs of Ascents: The fifteen Psalms from 120-134 are all given this title in the inspired text. They were likely a liturgical set to be sung by the Jewish faithful on their way “up” to Jerusalem for the three major annual festivals. There is a geographical progression from gentile lands (120) to the gates of the city (122) to the inner courts of the temple at night (134).

  1. The “goodness” and “pleasantness” of unity descending from the Lord. (133:1)
    a. It sets apart. (133:2)
    b. It leads to flourishing life. (133:3)
Caution: Unity is not inherently good.
  2. The main by-product of God-given unity: worship… (134)
    a. That never ends. (134:1-2)
    b. That invokes the Lord’s blessing. (134:3)

New Covenant Application: Just as the songs of ascents were sung by God’s people on their way up to Jerusalem for the OT festivals, so Christians should sing them as we sojourn toward the heavenly assembly of God’s people who worship night and day, in perfect unity, the one who is the fulfillment of these festivals: Jesus Christ. Long for the worship of heaven, Christian! Strive for its unity even now.
