Question: What is expositional preaching?
Answer: An expositional sermon is a sermon in which the point of a biblical text is the point of the
sermon, applied to the life of the congregation. At its best, it’s preaching which - however dependent it
may be for its content on the text or texts at hand - draws attention to inner-canonical connections that
inexorably (inevitably) move to Jesus Christ.
- Because Scripture is God-breathed, it is richly useful for the transformation of human life in line
with the gospel (3:16-17) - “Preach the word” (4:1-2)
- The focus of the charge
- The urgency of the charge
- The scope of the charge
- The manner of fulfilling the charge
- Many “will not put up with sound doctrine” in the terrible Last Days, but will prefer teachers who
say what they want to hear (4:2-4) - “Discharge all the duties of your ministry, Pastor” (5)
- Do gospel work: stay calm
- Do gospel work: endure suffering
- Do gospel work: preach the “evangel”
- Do gospel work: discharge all the duties of your ministr
