Part 7 of 11 in the Doctrine of God series
Intro to God’s Infinity
Turretin: “God’s infinity means he embraces every degree of perfection without any limitation.”
Infinity: God is infinite, or not limited…
- In his perfections
- In his being and well being → aseity & sufficiency
- Today:
- by our creaturely comprehension → incomprehensibility
- by time → eternity
- by space → immensity & omnipresence
- in power → omnipotence
- in knowledge (or wisdom) → omniscience (or omnisapience)
- Incomprehensibility: Infinity as it Relates to Our Understanding
Psalm 145:3: “Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised; and His greatness is unsearchable.”
- “Unsearchable”: there is no searching, counting, or full examination
- God’s infinity is not mathematical but absolute
- Eternity: Infinity as it Relates to Time
John 5:58: “Before Abraham was, I Am.”
Psalm 90:2: “From everlasting to everlasting, you are God.”
- A being in time is bound by all the characteristics of time: change, composition, dependency, and impotence
- How can God act (decree) in time if he is outside of time?
Augustine: “the God who is everlasting without time can change the created order without any change in Himself.”
