Big Picture: Psalm 72 is a prayer for God to fulfill the Davidic Covenant (and indeed all God’s covenant promises). Whether it was initially offered up for Solomon or by Solomon is not of great importance, as it finds its ultimate answer in “someone greater than Solomon”, Jesus Christ, the one who reigns over everyone—forever—all while filling the Earth with the glory of God.

   Whole Psalter Context: Psalm 72 lies at the very heart of the Psalter. It concludes the prayers of David (Books 1 &2) by revealing the future son from David’s line as the ultimate blessed man (Psalm 1) who receives the nations as his inheritance. (Psalm 2).
