Big Picture: Psalm 107 presents the story of the redeemed, a fourfold look at God’s deliverance of his people. It urges sinners to cry out to God for salvation and for the faithful to be overflowing with thankfulness as they meditate on God’s steadfast love toward them, shown chiefly in his acts of deliverance.

Whole Psalter Context: Psalm 107 is the answer to many of the prayers of Books 3 and 4, especially Psalm 106, and marks the transition to the final book of the Psalter, in which the historical backdrop shifts from the decline, fall, and exile of Israel, to the post-exilic period. Book 5 is the song of the redeemed!

1) Four aspects of God’s unfailing love in saving sinners:

• a) Aimless & Homeless -> Guided & Sheltered (4-9)
• b) Rebellious & Imprisoned -> Humbled & Freed (10-16)
• c) Foolish & Sick -> Made Wise by his Word & Healed (17-22)
• d) Afraid & Lost -> Calmed & Brought Home (23-32)

Therefore, redeemed sinner, give thanks!

2) A call for everyone to humble themselves before the God of the great reversal. (33-42)

3) A call to ponder God’s steadfast love (hesed) (43)

• a) For the Christian:
  • Meditate often on God’s acts of salvation, in your own life, and all around you!
  • Overflow with gratitude. b) For the non-Christian:
  • Add your story, to the story of the redeemed. Cry out to the God of your salvation!
