What is discipling?
- The intentional encouragement of other Christians through deliberate, loving relationships and training in God’s Word.
- It is a subset of our overall discipleship to Christ
- A process or a lifestyle, not a program or an event.
- It is realizing that if I am a follower of Jesus, it is both natural and normal for me to intentionally help other Christians follow Jesus.
Why should all Christians prioritize discipling?
- Because God’s love compels us. (1 John 4:10)
- Because the church grows together. (Eph. 4:15-16)
- For our joy! (2 John 4)
- For God’s glory. (John 15:8)
Where should I be discipling?
Primarily in your local church, for at least three reasons…
- We have limited time.
- We promised to do so.
- We have limited gifting.
Who should I be discipling in my church?
A helpful framework for deciding: Local, Needful, Willing, Available.
How do I disciple someone?
- Primarily: With the Word! Read it. Study it. Discuss it. Pray through it. Read and discuss other Christians books that are firmly grounded in the bible. Pray together to apply the Word.
- Secondarily: By talking honestly and openly about past mistakes and triumphs.
Objection: BUT I AM TOO BUSY (or physically/geographically restricted)!!!!
Answer: Evaluate carefully your priorities, get creative, and roll discipling into your everyday life.
