Big Picture: The major theme of this text is Jesus’ dependence on God in the face of temptation. When faced with trial and temptation Jesus turns to God in prayer and submits to his will – even death on a cross, the “cup” of God’s wrath.
1. Jesus sets us an example in attitude and prayer.
- The text is very open about Jesus’ agony and struggle as he faces this moment.
2. Jesus prays openly and honestly to God and submits to God’s will.
- God will listen—not by delivering Jesus from death, but by giving him strength.
